Laying a new lawn surface is quite simple. All you really need is: Love, air and WOLF-Garten. We will tell you here what to watch out for, and how to go about it.
If you want to lay a new lawn, it should deliver what it promises for the next few years. It should be lush green, low-maintenance and dense. And it must be somewhat durable - especially if children will be playing on it. Thus the choice of the right quality seed is important: Did you know that the quality of the lawn seed is 60% responsible for the success? With WOLF-Garten you are really on the safe side here. But we wouldn't be Germany's leading lawn professionals if we didn't also tackle the remaining 40% with easy to use products.
For example, soil preparation. This is important in order to give the grass a quick start and also to provide the optimum preconditions for later healthy growth. You can effectively loosen compacted soil deep down with our digging fork. To improve the structure of the soil, you can mix peat with sandy soils and sand with loamy soils. After that, the surface should rest for two to three weeks.
Before you can sow the seed, the coarser lumps of earth must be broken down with the Combi Crumbler, and small stones, roots and other foreign objects removed from the level surface with a rake.
Which lawn mixture you choose depends entirely on the location and the requirements that you expect your lawn to fulfil. A true all-rounder is the hard-wearing WOLF-Garten »Loretta«. Due to its quick germination, this lawn is already dense and durable after a few weeks. For shaded locations we recommend »Supra«, the best for shade and sun. The playing lawn »Family« is the ideal leisure time lawn for the whole family to play on. All seed mixtures are optimally supplemented by a lawn starter fertilizer which is specifically matched to the requirements of young grasses, and which delivers the nutrients to the delicate plants as they need them.
The ideal time for re-laying the lawn is the beginning of May or the middle of September. When re-laying in May you must take care that the soil temperature is at least 10 °C, as only then does the seed germinate optimally. In the autumn, on the other hand, the soil has already been warmed up by the summer, and showers ease the task of watering. At this time of the year, however, leaves can fall on the freshly-sown seed. You can sweep these up quite easily with a tine rake or a plain rake, so that the young plants once more receive sufficient air and sun.
When sowing it is important to deploy the seed and the fertilizer evenly, for example with the WE 430 Spreader or the battery-operated WE-B Universal Spreader. You can avoid errors when sowing if you work lengthwise with the fertilizer and transversely with the seed.
Maintain your young lawn and keep it supplied with enough water. The fresh seed needs a lot of moisture, especially in the first three weeks. During dry weather you should water the surface several times a day to root depth, thus protecting them from drying out and ensuring germination.
The time for the first mowing has arrived when the young, delicate blades have grown to a height of 8-10 cm. However, do not cut your new lawn too short; a height of 5 cm is ideal for the first cut.
The correct supply of nutrients is important for later care. Lawn fertilizer should be spread again after about six weeks. You will have little work with the long-term lawn fertilizer for up to 100 days, or for up 120 days with the »Super« extra long-term fertilizer. Both can be simply measured out and cleanly distributed. Fertilizing three times a year is sufficient, except for extremely shaded positions. A shaded lawn simply has an increased requirement for nutrients, which you can easily counteract with shorter fertilizing intervals.
