Novice gardeners will find useful tips and applications here on the subject of laying new lawns and lawn renovation.
When laying a new lawn you should not make any compromises, least of all with the selection of lawn seed. It has become so easy to produce and retain an equally beautiful and robust lawn that nowadays, nobody must put up with a sensitive and battered lawn. The one-time expenditure is always worthwhile, since it will give you many years of pleasure with your lawn and you will not have to renovate it or to start again from the beginning.

Why use special lawn seed?
You can place the most strenuous demands on your lawn without any reservations: It should be beautiful and sturdy so that playing children and happy garden parties cannot ruin it. The use of quality lawn mixtures and a little care means that 'walking on the grass' is definitely permitted and will not damage the beauty at all.
If you do not want to compromise on the result, you should not compromise when buying the lawn seed either. In the long run, the higher purchase cost will pay back several times over.
With lawns, the successful mixture of different types of grass makes the difference from agricultural meadows. You will notice this already at the germination stage and definitely later, when the lawn has established. Whilst agricultural grasses are cultured for tall growth, lawn plants should grow horizontally. This guarantees a dense, soft and robust turf, less surface for moss and weed attack, reduced amount of grass cuttings, as well as load-bearing and regeneration capabilities. Quality lawn mixtures by WOLF-Garten germinate rapidly, completely and evenly. The special lawn grass is less sensitive to dryness than the grasses in cheap agricultural seed mixtures. Only quality lawn seed fulfils the requirements regarding durability, nutrient requirement, growth height, volume of cuttings, resistance to dryness, shade tolerance, and more.
What kind of lawn person are you?
After you have planned the size and shape of your future lawn, the question now arises as to which type of lawn is the right one for you and which lawn mixture you will need for it. Both decorative English lawns and flowering meadows are primarily there to look at, but not to be used. A more practical lawn is one that you can walk or lie on, use for playing and partying, and whose care does not become excessive. Select the one to suit your needs:
New or old garden?
Garden owners who have taken over existing gardens but who are not happy with the lawn can save themselves the trouble of digging up the lawn and preparing the ground. Using the WOLF-Garten NOVAPLANT® system you can produce a splendid result in only a few weeks. The necessary steps for successful lawn renovation are shown below:
Lawn renovation without digging

1. Mowing
Mow the old lawn as short as possible. Select the lowest setting on your lawnmower. Decide which of our models is best suited for your requirements.

2. Scarifying
This is particularly important: The more thorough the better. Scarify several times in the longitudinal and in the lateral directions. It is important that the new lawn seed has access to the soil. This is the only way to produce a continuous lawn turf. If the ground is heavily covered in weed, weed killer should also be applied.

3. Bringing out
The area is now well prepared for the NOVAPLANT® lawn seed and starter fertiliser. The lawn spreader WE 430 or battery-driven universal spreader WE-B provides even distribution. The more even the seed and fertiliser is spread, the better will be the result. Errors can be avoided by spreading the fertiliser in the longitudinal direction, and the seed in the lateral direction.

4. Covering
You can now make use of the natural properties of peat to protect the seed from drying out, being eaten by birds and from the wind. Simply applya 0.5 cm thick layer of peat. Another advantage of peat: As soon as it has lightened in colour it is high time to water the newlawn.

5. Watering
Despite the function of the peat: Remain alert. Because the lawn should not be allowed to dry out under any circumstances. For you, this means: You must water your lawn several times a day, depending upon the weather. This is decisive for the success of your lawn renewal. After about six weeks, this success will be apparent in the shape of a thick, smooth lawn.
